Bam! Bam! Bam!

Angelica answered the door. Robbie greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. “How is my favorite Angel?”

She smiled and shook her head. “I don’t know why you and Jared insist on calling me that. I’m definitely no angel.”

“Oh, I bet you are, you just don’t realize it.”

Angelica chuckled and took his arm. “Well, whatever makes you two happy. Today I need to shop for tonight’s dinner and I want you to join us. One of your friends is here from Chicago. Ken Barker.” She waited a minute to see his reaction to the news.

Robbie smiled.

Angelica smiled. Jared would be surrounded by his friends tonight. “I’m assuming you’ll be over then about six o’clock?”

“Aye, that I will.”

“Good. I thought I’d make a pot roast, so I need to visit the butcher as well as the mercantile.”

“Shall we be off then, lass?”

In her best brogue she said, “Aye, we be off.”

After they left the house, she took his arm, which was actually about her shoulder height because he was so tall. Angelica steered him to the mercantile first.

“Hello Roscoe,” she called to the owner who was behind the counter checking out another customer.

“Good morning, Angelica…Robert.”

“Good morning, to ye,” said Robert.

Angelica picked up the vegetables. Canning was something she enjoyed and she had plenty of beef broth in the pantry.

Next was the butcher.

“Hi Oscar. I’m preparing pot roast for dinner and I need the biggest chuck roast you have.”

“Ah, Angelica and my big Scottish friend, Robert. How are you today?”

Angelica smiled. “I’m fine, thanks for asking. How are you and the missus?”

“Right as rain,” said Robert.

“We’re both good. The baby is supposed to be here any time now and my Gretchen is ready to have that child in her arms not her belly.” He laughed.

“Can’t say as I blame her,” said Angelica. “Now I’d like that big chuck roast.” She pointed toward the glass case. “And the smaller one next to it for good measure. I’ve got three men with good appetites to feed.”

If Robbie ate like Jared and Ken, she’d need every ounce of the four pounds of meat she ended up buying.

Robbie carried all the groceries.

As she led around the corner by the newspaper office just four blocks from home, she heard a shot and Robbie groaned. The groceries hit the ground just before he did.

“Robbie!” She knelt beside him and felt for a pulse. Thank God, she found one.

“Don’t worry about him, Angelica. Worry about me.”

She looked up into the face of Clay Stockton who held a pistol in hand. “Clay, what have you done? Are you crazy?”

“Not crazy...desperate. Jared has one of my cufflinks and I need it back. I’m going to trade you for that little piece of evidence.”

Angelica stayed stock still, not moving from Robbie’s side. She looked at Clay’s hands. They were battered. Angelica looked up at him. “You murdered Vanessa.”

“It was an accident.”

She shook her head. “Slitting her throat after beating her up, is not an accident.”

Suddenly the newspaper owner came around the corner.
